Introduction

Expeditions are how Pax Autocratica expands. From your colony you send squads into the fractured territories of the Tyris System to gather resources, conscript citizens, complete quests and trade with wandering merchants. The map is divided into sectors of increasing difficulty, from tutorial areas like Auroria's Eye to the Elysia Oasis — the site of the game's decisive battle — and the Drakon Mercenary Camp where you can hire mercenaries. Expedition rewards feed directly back into the colony: rare drops, core fragments and captured enemies all strengthen the State. Balancing how many soldiers you commit to an expedition against how many you keep home to defend is a constant strategic tension.

Core Mechanics

Expeditions are structured around story quests and sector progression. Quests such as Space Resources, Engage the Scourgeborn and Tactical Development send you to specific sectors with objectives that combine colony and combat gameplay: gather resources, fight Scourgeborn, or clear a decisive battle like the one at the Elysia Oasis. Each sector has a difficulty tier, and deeper sectors hold better loot but demand stronger squads. Wandering merchants appear across sectors and let you trade gathered materials for supplies, blueprints and gear. Progress unlocks new areas and quests, and a known softlock issue on some expedition states can be resolved by restarting the expedition.

Advantages

Expeditions are the primary source of growth and the most exciting content in the game. They bring back rare resources, high-rarity drops, core fragments and captured enemies that feed the prison and conversion system, creating a positive feedback loop with colony management. Because sectors are varied and quests are guided, there is always a clear next objective, and the merchant system lets you convert surplus materials into exactly what your colony needs. The story quests, from the tutorial through the Elysia Oasis decisive battle, give structure and stakes to every expedition. Every successful expedition makes the next one easier, which keeps the growth loop satisfying and forward-moving.

Challenges

Expeditions are risky and expensive. Each one costs soldiers and time, and a failed battle can lose a squad you spent hours building. Difficulty spikes between sectors can catch you unprepared, and the known softlock on some expedition states can waste a run until you restart it. Trade prices and merchant inventories are limited, so you cannot always buy your way out of a shortage, and committing too many soldiers to expeditions leaves your colony undefended against raids. Plan for losses and the occasional softlock, and never commit more soldiers than you can afford to lose on a single run.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many soldiers should I bring on an expedition?+
Bring the smallest squad that can win, and keep the rest home to defend the colony. Early sectors are doable with three or four soldiers, while deep sectors and the Elysia Oasis decisive battle may need a full squad with a tank, DPS and support. Match your squad size to the sector difficulty and your confidence in your core loadout.
What is the Elysia Oasis decisive battle?+
The Elysia Oasis is the site of a major decisive battle in the Tyris System. It is a structured quest encounter that tests your squad composition and core loadouts, and beating it unlocks further progression and high-value rewards. Prepare your best squad, bring a tank and a support, and learn the encounter's phases before going in.
How do I fix an expedition softlock?+
Some expedition states are affected by a known softlock bug. The official workaround is to restart the expedition, which returns you to a playable state without losing your colony. The developers have acknowledged the issue and it is expected to be patched during Early Access, so check the latest news before assuming a state is permanent.

Quick Tips

💡

Always trade with wandering merchants before returning — surplus materials are worth more as gear and blueprints than they are sitting in your warehouse. Check merchant inventories before each expedition so you know what to gather and what to buy along the way. Gear beats idle stockpiles every time. Merchants make surplus materials far more valuable than leaving them in storage.

💡

Conscript citizens on expedition whenever possible; population is the slowest resource to grow at home, and every conscript is a permanent laborer or future soldier. Treat each expedition as a chance to grow your colony as well as gather loot. Treat population like the rarest resource of all. Population is the slowest resource to grow, so grab it whenever you can.

💡

Farm high-rarity drops in deep sectors only after your squad has solid core upgrades. Jumping into high-difficulty sectors too early risks losing your best squad, so build your loadout first and treat deep runs as a reward for preparation. Preparation turns deep runs from risky into routine. A well-prepared squad turns even the deepest sectors into routine runs.
